Historical Photo: Police Legal Eagles

Excerpt

A candid historical note capturing the contrasting careers and personalities of Adv Louis Kok and Adv Anton Wiid, two seasoned police legal practitioners whose partnership blended academic expertise with hard‑earned street experience.

Abstract

This historical photo highlights Adv Louis Kok and Adv Anton Wiid, colleagues who worked closely within police legal structures. Kok, a former SAPS general and professor, brought deep academic legal knowledge, while Wiid contributed practical policing experience from years on the beat. Their dynamic often reflected the classic “good cop–dirty cop” contrast, enriched by humour and mutual respect. The anecdote illustrates the interplay between theory and street‑level policing within South Africa’s legal environment.

Adv Anton Wiid

A colleague and I are usually in the same team. We both have police backgrounds. One is the good cop, Louis Kok, and I am the other, the dirty one. Louis Kok was a general in the SAPS legal department. Still, he was a plastic police officer, and I started walking the beat and later became a senior police officer.

“Hy was maar ‘n haasman in ‘n uniform maar met baie kennis van die reg. Hy was immers ‘n professor gewees.

Ek het baie van hom geleer, maar van die straat het hy niks geken nie. As ons verskil het, het hy voor ander advokate gesê ek is ’n skelm polisieman. Ek het maar in my mou gelag!” – Anton Wiid.
