Captain Catherine Naidu is a proud daughter of Westcliff, Chatsworth, with deep family roots in the historic Bangladesh Flats, Unit 3. Raised in a community built on resilience, hard work, and family values, she developed from an early age a strong sense of justice, discipline, and service to others.
Her educational journey began at Southern Cross Primary School (now the Teachers’ Centre) before continuing at Glenover Secondary School, where she matriculated in 1983. These formative years in Chatsworth helped shape the determined and principled woman who would later become one of the South African Police Service’s most respected investigators.
Answering the Call to Serve
On 9 January 1985, Catherine Govender answered a higher calling by attesting as a member of the South African Police Service. She underwent her police training at Cato Manor Police College and reported for duty at Chatsworth Police Station in July 1985.
What began as a young recruit’s dream soon evolved into an extraordinary policing career spanning more than four decades.
Building a Legacy
From 1985 to 1988, she served as a Charge Office Assistant, learning the fundamentals of policing and public service. Between 1988 and 1991, she served as a Court Orderly, gaining invaluable experience within the criminal justice system.
On 11 March 1991, she joined the Enquiry Staff, investigating non-serious crimes and developing the investigative skills that would define her career.
Her passion for uncovering the truth led her to the Detective Branch on 13 August 1993. After completing the Basic Detective Course in September 1994, she established herself as a meticulous investigator known for her professionalism, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice.
The Iron Lady
Throughout her distinguished career, Captain Govender became known as “The Iron Lady” a title earned through courage, determination, and an uncompromising stance against crime and corruption.
She investigated a wide spectrum of cases, including:
Murder
Rape
Robbery
Corruption
Police misconduct
Departmental investigations
Sexual offences
Property and vehicle-related crimes
Her investigative work resulted in numerous successful convictions, particularly in corruption cases involving police officials. She became renowned for her ability to pursue difficult cases fearlessly, regardless of the status or position of those involved.
Captain Naidu’s message was always clear:
Crime has no place in society, and corruption has no place in policing.
Champion of Integrity
Few investigators have demonstrated the same level of commitment to ethical policing. Throughout her career, she maintained a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and misconduct.
Her dedication to honesty, accountability, and professional excellence earned her the respect of colleagues, prosecutors, magistrates, and the communities she served.
She firmly believed that every victim deserved justice, every case deserved attention, and every investigation deserved the highest standards of professionalism.

Sergeant – 1 June 1992
Inspector – 1 December 1997
Lieutenant – 1 April 2011

After more than 41 years and 3 months of dedicated service, Captain Catherine Naidu retired on 30 April 2026, leaving behind an exceptional legacy.
Her career stands as a testament to courage, perseverance, integrity, and unwavering dedication to the people of South Africa.
