HOOFARTIKEL
Is Sjina, met behulp van Rusland en die BRICS-groep, besig om die enigste supermoontheid op aarde te word?
Indien waar, hoe affekteer hierdie nuwe internasionale politieke realiteit Suid-Afrika en sy nà-’94 verswakte veiligheidsmagte? Hoe hou ons koers en nugtere analise van ons snelveranderende nasionale veiligheidsomgewing; en hoe word ons huishoudings, gesinne en ons kinders se toekoms in hierdie gefolterde land, om FA Venter se gevleuelde woorde te onleen, daardeur aangeraak? Hoe word Suid-Afrikaners geraak deur die intense ekonomiese magstryd tussen die VSA en Sjina, veral in die lig van aanduidings dat Shina se handelsurplus met Europa en die VSA in Desember 2025 vir die eerste keer een triljoen dollar oorskry het.
Die onlangse G-20 beraad in Johannesburg het dit duidelik gemaak dat Suid-Afrika se korrupsieregering vele selfvervaardigde ekonomiese, politieke en sosio-maatskaplike probleme in die gesig staar. Tydens die beraad is daar voorspel dat 185 BRICS-lede teen 2025 vyftig persent van die wêreld sal beheer, met die Sjinese yuan as geldeenheid. Suid-Afrika se pro-Hamas korrupsieregering is nou deel van die Rusland-Sjina-Noord Korea-Iran-Kuba aksis, en stem klokslag-gereeld in die Verenigde Nasies saam met hierdie lande teen die Westerse stategemeenskap.
Soos wat Nongqai al die afgelope 118 jaar doen, gaan die Redaksie in die komende jaar diepte-artikels oor ‘n wye verskeidenheid geo-politieke onderwerpe en konkomitante nasionale veiligheidsvraagstukke publiseer. Nongqai se nuwe redaksie staan in die jaar 2025 op die skouers van reuse, soos emirituslede Hennie Heymans, Willem Steenkamp en Sarie van Niekerk. Nie alleen is hierdie troika joernaliste en redakteurs die rugraat van Nongqai nie, maar elkeen ook legendariese lede van Suid-Afrika se veiligheidsmagte en Intelligensiegemeenskap (IG).
Nongqai (“die koning se wagte in Zoeloe”), se missie is akkurate geskiedskrywing – dit wat regtig in en met Suid-Afrika se veiligheidsmagte gebeur het en daagliks, weekliks en maandeliks aan die gebeur is. Ons vertel die stories en plaas die fotos’ van toegewyde misdaadbestryders, dapper soldate, vindingryke spioene, spraaksame diplomate en wetstoepassers wat hul lewens toegewy het aan dienslewering en diens aan die staat. In hierdie konteks en om hierdie rede nooi ons al ons lesers om skryfwerk oor ons taal, kultuur en landsgeskiedenis enotesiasties voort te siet met nuwe artikels, fotos’, boeke, diepte-artikels, rubrieke en artikelreekse oor die wel en weë van Suid-Afrika se veiligheidsmagte. Stories en artikels oor persoonlike ondervindinge en ervaringe van die lede en gesinne van ons veiligheidsmagte is baie welkom, personalia-stories, staaltjies en kursusse bygewoon, amusante gebeure op diens en kampvuurstories oor die Angolese bosoorlog is almal baie welkom. Nongqai Abstract
Nongqai, a magazine dedicated to preserving South Africa’s national security history, has undergone a restructuring, with Brigadier Hennie Heymans appointed as the new chief editor. Previously, Heymans served as executive editor, a role now taken over by a new appointee. Heymans is recognized for his significant contributions in creating a balanced narrative of the pre-1994 South African security forces, countering one-sided and negative portrayals that dominated post-1994 narratives. Through Nongqai, he revived a vital collection of source material, ensuring a broader perspective on the past that is indispensable for historians. The magazine has served as a platform for veterans to share their oral histories, preventing these accounts from being lost, and has published insightful articles and special editions focused on specific topics. Despite lacking publishing expertise and financial resources, Heymans single-handedly managed the magazine’s production for years, later joined by Dr. Willem Steenkamp and, more recently, Henning van Aswegen. Nongqai stands as a testament to Heymans’ selfless dedication to historical truth, driven by his loyalty to the South African Police and appreciation for the security forces’ role in stabilizing the country during challenging times. The magazine, guided by the motto “To preserve the past without living in it,” remains a trusted, unbiased source of historical documentation, reflecting Heymans’ integrity and passion.

For the first time a comprehensive guide to one of the most Top Secret operations of the SADF and Military Intelligence, namely the support for UNITA, is disclosed to the public. This operation continued for almost three decades, from 1975 to the end of 1992 under a series of secret code names. It is an account of one of the most remarkable and most unlikely military alliances in modern warfare. It is surprising because, despite many fundamental differences, the SADF and UNITA were able to work together in a synergistic way that resulted in a force multiplier of note. While the SADF was generally regarded being there to support a white minority government, UNITA was a black guerrilla liberation movement. And yet, their common enemy – the Communist-backed SWAPO and MPLA (both backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba) – proved to be stronger than any differences. This work for the first time discloses the origins of the alliance, the people involved, the strategic intent, the extent and nature of the support, and the major contribution made to the military success of the SADF during the Border War, as well as to countering the imperialistic ambitions of the Soviet Union – until an acceptable political settlement could be achieved in the region. This is a must have for any serious student of intelligence and military history who is interested in the Cold War confrontation which took place in Angola and northern Namibia between South Africa and its pro-Western allies, and the Communist-aligned SWAPO, MPLA, Cuban, East German and Soviet Forces.
