CATO MANOR: HISTORICAL DOCUMENT: FRONT PAGE NATAL MERCURY

Brig HB Heymans (SAP – Ret)

I grew up in Durban where my father was a policeman at Somtseu Rd. We were regular readers of the Natal Mercury, The Daily News and Sunday Tribune.

The riots in Cato Manor made an indelible on me as a young scholar. I remember I was 13-years old. I remember the search lights at night over Cato Manor. At that time my father was on “stand by” and they slept at their station in a garage. I paid him a visit while he was on “stand by”.

When I joined the SA Police during 1964, I worked with many of the old “Cato Manor-veterans.”

I have published research into the murder of the policemen who were murdered at Cato Manor.

This Mercury newspaper is now 65-years old and to save it for posterity I have decided to save it on the Nongqai-blog.
