Ida Steyn

Johan Coetser dedicated 37 years of his life to the South African Police. His journey as a police diver began in 1984. Although diving was always regarded as a secondary function alongside his policing duties, it became an enduring part of his professional life and personal passion.

He served in Public Order Policing (Riot Unit 4) and spent 17 years at KBE, where diving remained one of his secondary functions. He retired from the SAPS in 2020, but retirement did not end his involvement with diving. He returned to regular diving in 2019 and has continued to develop his skills ever since.

Specialised Diving and Rescue Qualifications

Over the years Johan obtained a range of specialised qualifications, including Class 4 Emergency Diver, Two-Star Sports Diver, Rescue Diver, Decompression Chamber Operator and Swift Water Rescue Technician.

Wondergat: divers entering the water at this historic inland diving site.

Wondergat, near Lichtenburg in the North West Province, is one of South Africa’s best-known inland diving sites. Its deep, cold and demanding underwater environment has challenged generations of divers and has become an important part of South African diving history.

Divers and members of the Special Task Force veteran community gathered at Wondergat.

The site is also strongly associated with the history of the former South African Police Special Task Force. The famous Task Force board placed deep underwater at Wondergat became a lasting symbol of courage, discipline and sacrifice.

The historic board carries the well-known words: “You have never lived till you have almost died, and for those who fight for it, life has a flavour the protected will never know.”

A Passion That Continues After Retirement

After retirement, Johan continued to expand his diving qualifications. He qualified as a Master Diver and Nitrox Diver and is currently working towards his Divemaster and Instructor qualifications. He is also involved with the LGV (Landelike Gemeenskapsveiligheid) Diving Unit.

Divers and supporters gathered at Wondergat to remember its history and celebrate the diving community.

Johan has more than 1,000 dives recorded in his logbook, although he freely admits that not every dive was logged. During approximately the last year alone, he completed more than 100 dives.
