ADAMUS PAULUS STEMMET: DIE MAN AGTER DIE DESTYDSE STAATSVEILIGHEIDSRAAD
ABSTRACT: This Special Edition of Nongqai presents a biography of Adamus (AP) Stemmet the man behind South Africa’s former State Security Council. It contains tributes to the distinguished civil servant who is regarded as the architect of 1980s strategic security coordination between the components of the then SA security & intelligence community a strategic thinker who played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s national security structures during a critical period in its history. Stemmet served as Deputy Head and later Chief Coordinating Officer of the Branch: National Security (Tak Landsveiligheid) within the Office of the Prime Minister, later known as the Secretariat of the State Security Council (SSSC). He was also the founder and Head of the Branch Strategic Communication (BSC), and ultimately the last Chief Coordinator of the SSSC – the first civilian to hold this post.
The edition includes personal reflections from various colleagues, who recall Stemmet’s exceptional leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
