This historical picture-essay refers to the former SA Police Holiday Camp later known as Port Edward Holiday Resort and up to the time when it was a Section 21 Company that functioned under the auspices of the Minister and Commissioner of SA Police.

The Trustees of the Resort purchased the Port Edward Holiday Resort during April 1947 for R90000 (45 000 pounds sterling).

Where did money come from? Contrary to popular belief the money came from money collected from policemen during the Second World War for the comforts fund for members of the Police Brigade. During the fall of Tobruk members of the Police Brigade (6 SA Infantry) were captured and sent to POW camps in Axis-Europe.

After the war the money was placed in trust and trustees bought the farm on behalf of members of the SA Police.

National Commissioner Jackie Selebi once asked brig RB Brandt and myself if the Nationalist Government gave the land to us, but we informed him that the then members of the SA Police bought it and later the members were once asked to donate funds to the Resort.

Here are some articles depicting the first resort wholly owned by members of the SA Police Force:

Genl-maj Herklaas Meyer berig soos volg:
