Abstract
Warrant Officer Donavan Naidoo showed great courage when he acted against dangerous suspects while off duty. Even after being injured, he continued to protect the public and helped stop a serious crime.
His quick thinking led to the arrest of one suspect and the recovery of several weapons. Naidoo’s actions show strong commitment to safety and duty. His bravery reflects the sacrifice many officers make with little recognition.

“WARRANT Officer Donavan Naidoo of the National Intervention Unit while off-duty with his six-year-old daughter.
Despite being shot during a confrontation with dangerous suspects, Naidoo’s bravery led to two fatalities and one arrest, with multiple weapons.
His call to fight crime triumphed over the needs of his own child.
“Whilst off duty he planned and executed a successful operation within an hour of receiving a tip off and produced astonishing results. He initiated the operation to approach the extremely dangerous suspects who were driving in a hijacked vehicle. His courage propelled him to exchange fire with CIT (cash-in-transit) suspects where he was shot and injured but never retreated nor surrendered in pursuit of excellence.
“He fatally wounded two of them and arrested another one where two pistols were recovered, and later an M4 assault rifle was also recovered which later emerged that the rifle was taken from a CIT robbery where a guard was fatally wounded,” it read.
The SAPS said Naidoo established a well-informed informant network, and through his own initiative and dedication in combating crime, assisted in the attempt to arrest high profile perpetrators.

Having worked with Donnie more than a decade back across many takedown operations of hardened criminals, in particular drug lords, he is fearless in the face of danger. His attention to detail in operational planning as well as his ethical and uncompromising attitude to dealing with criminals who try bully members because of their “connections” is phenomenal. He refuses to back down from anything and anyone – there are many SAPS members who could learn from him – both tactically and ethically !
True courage isn’t something you switch on when you’re on duty it is who you are at your core. Warrant Officer Donovan Naidoo proved exactly that.
He stepped forward and put his own life on the line to protect others. That kind of bravery cannot be taught it comes from deep integrity, commitment, and an unshakable sense of responsibility to the South African Police Service.
His actions reflect not only exceptional skill and training, but a level of dedication that goes far beyond expectation. Officers like him are the reason communities feel safer, even in the most uncertain moments.

Congratulations to a phenomenal police officer. I just want to highlight an incident that I came across a few weeks ago. A Warrant Officer from Orange Farm was promoted to a Captain for one incident in December 2025.He was in a state vehicle and he came across an armed robbery, he used the state vehicle to block off the suspects. The robbery was prevented and all the suspects escaped.
He didn’t fire his weapon but was shot in the shoulder and injured. He was promoted to Captain in January 2026. All good and well but clearly there are double standards here.
This is just one eg, there are many very similar ones.
I see that Naidoo prevented an armed robbery, dealt with the suspects decisively whilst shot and injured. He placed his child second and for that he gets a once off recognition on stage.

I’ve known Warrant Officer Donovan Naidoo, as a friend, for the past + /10 Years. He has always come to the fore sincere and trustworthy. I’ve found Donovan to be both diligent and dignified with a stable demeanor which enables him to interact effectively with people at all levels in society. It is quite rare to find a policeman of his caliber. A very honest and hardworking individual. Congratulations W/O Naidoo, you deserve much more.
