“Today, with heavy hearts, we bid farewell to a remarkable man, a dedicated servant of the people, and an exemplary leader in the South African Police Service (SAPS), Brigadier Matthyssen of Pinetown SAPS. It is with profound sadness that we mourn his sudden passing today, following a massive heart attack. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals at Hillcrest Hospital, he left us, leaving behind a legacy of courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice.

Brigadier Matthyssen was not just a police officer; he was a pillar of strength, a beacon of hope, and a true guardian of our community. Throughout his years of service, he demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to protecting and serving the people of Pinetown and beyond. Under his command, countless officers found inspiration and guidance, learning what it means to serve with honour and compassion. His leadership was marked by fairness, discipline, and a deep sense of duty—a rare combination that earned him the respect and admiration of all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

To his family, we extend our deepest condolences. We cannot imagine the pain of losing such a beloved husband, father, and friend. Know that his contributions to society and the lives he touched will never be forgotten. To his friends, colleagues, and the entire SAPS community, we share in your grief. Brigadier Matthyssen was a brother in arms, a mentor, and a leader whose absence will be felt deeply.

As we say goodbye, let us remember the lessons he taught us through his actions: to serve selflessly, to stand firm in the face of adversity, and to always uphold the values of justice and humanity. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit will continue to guide and inspire the Pinetown SAPS and all who knew him.

Rest in peace, Brigadier Matthyssen. Your duty on earth is done, and now you stand guard in a higher realm. We salute you for your service, your sacrifice, and the indelible mark you have left on our hearts.”
